The Challenges of Integrating AI

"What does it take to make AI work in your organization?"

Artificial intelligence is a technical problem, and one where we are seeing incredibly rapid advances. But for organizations to benefit from AI, they need to make careful non-technical decisions. We'll walk through successful and unsuccessful methods of adopting AI, based both on the economic history of new technology adoption as well as direct experience working on AI rollout with Canadian governments, hospitals, banks, and manufacturers.

Person Directed Living - A Culture Transformation

Concurrent Session 2

May 12, 2026 10:30 AM

Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, has embarked on a whole-organization culture transformation journey to embrace and sustain Person Directed Living. What makes this endeavor exceptional is the breath of organizational change and adoption of Person Directed Living undertaken across a variety of living spaces and clinical care and services. Largely, Person Directed Living philosophies have been applied to long term care/nursing home environments. However, Riverview Health Centre provides a range of living (long term care, dementia care, chronic care), transitional care (palliative, neurological rehabilitation), and community support and outreach services (day hospital, diagnostic clinic services, and community social programs). Our intent is to integrate these principles into the daily functioning, interactions and fabric of all programs and teams across the organization. This hands-on session, will describe the evidence-informed and organic approach to culture transformation Riverview has embarked on, allowing participants the opportunity to explore the possibilities for their own organization. To this effect, we will describe the journey we have embarked upon and progress to date, guided by our Person Directed Living Implementation Model. Participants will have the opportunity to examine their organizational context, living environment, workplace practices, and care process and understand the importance of the Person Directed Living Commitments as a foundational guide for integration within a culture transformation model. We will share the specific steps Riverview has undertaken to document our journey and monitor the impact and outcome of this change. Part of this is discussing the small, medium and large investments that organizations may want to consider when embarking on this transformation. Overall, we see that Person Directed Living is not a ‘program’ in the sense that once the attention is turned to other things or priorities, it fades away and people return to the ‘usual’ way of doing things. The intent of Person Directed Living is to create lasting change through replacement of an existing culture with a new one. Person Directed Living becomes part of the fabric of the organization and serves as the basis in how we think, act, problem-solve, make decisions, and treat each other.

Nursing Home Without Walls: Helping older adults age where they call home

The Nursing Home Without Walls (NHWW) program aims to enhance the experience of aging by empowering older adults and their caregivers in New Brunswick to age in their homes. Created by researcher Dr. Suzanne Dupuis-Blanchard from the Université de Moncton, this program facilitates healthy aging at home by providing access to essential knowledge, support, and services. By enabling older adults to age in place, NHWW contributes to prolonged independence, minimizing the need for premature admission to long-term care (LTC) facilities, decreasing unnecessary emergency department visits and feeling engaged with their community. At this presentation you will hear about how the program started, the impact it is having, and the Pan-Canadian spread of NHWW across the country.

The Future of Long-Term Care in Manitoba: Beyond Beds and Buildings

The long-term care sector in Manitoba is at a crossroads. With growing waitlists, shifting demographics, and rising expectations from baby boomers, the traditional model of long-term care is no longer enough. This presentation will explore how providers can move beyond a “beds and buildings” mindset toward creating communities that truly support aging in place. Drawing on Villa Youville’s experience and the development of the Villa Youville Model, Yann Boissonneault will share how one organization is redefining care through person-directed living, financial resilience, and community integration. From innovative housing partnerships to intergenerational services and sustainable business practices, this session will highlight practical steps that any long-term care provider can consider to prepare for the future. Participants will leave with a fresh perspective on what is possible, along with concrete ideas to bring back to their own organizations, boards, and communities.
