University of Manitoba

The University of Manitoba's Centre for Community Oral Health (CCOH) has been caring for underserved populations since 1985. The Health Promotion Unit of CCOH has been helping improve the oral and overall health of the elderly and other special needs populations by providing prevention-focused, evidence based oral health promotion programming. The Home Dental Care Program provides oral health promotion services along with essential dental treatment services for 38 Personal Care Homes within the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, as well as specialized services for home-bound patients residing in Winnipeg.

The primary activities of the health promotion unit are to increase oral health knowledge, and awareness of daily oral care skills through in-services, workshops, and presentations. These programs have been delivered on-site to many health care providers and family caregivers including health care aides, nurses, speech language pathologists, dieticians, physicians, administrators, nursing student's and other individuals concerned about the oral health of the elderly and other special needs populations.
