Sandy Bell
Award for Excellence in Community Services
Sandy is the Director of Quality & Education Services at the Misericordia
Health Centre. Sandy has just completed her Masters of Nursing Degree
and chose for her Thesis “Vision Care Services for the Personal
Care Home resident; An unmet need for the Elderly.” Following
the completion of her Masters degree, she decided that there may be
more that could be done in the area of vision and care of the elderly.
She lobbied Manitoba Health to fund her “Vision Screening”
project, which would detect visual impairment in Residents that have
entered the Long Term Care program. Her Vision Screening project officially
named “Eyes on the Elderly – a Falls Prevention Initiative”
has been approved and funded by Manitoba Health and is being piloted
out of Misericordia Health Centre beginning May 1, 2006. Her long range
goal is to have vision screening offered in a community setting.
Our congratulations to you Sandy for initiating what appears to be
a very worthwhile endeavor.
Recreation
Department,
Tuxedo Villa
Award for Excellence in Recreation Therapy Services
As you know this year the Winter Olympics were held in Turin, Italy.
The recreation staff at Tuxedo Villa decided to hold their own Olympics
for the residents at the same time as the ones in Turin. They built
an outdoor curling rink, a biathlon trail, snowshoe course, cross country
ski trail and organized residents into competitive events. They awarded
medals to winners, took pictures of the residents participating in the
events and emailed some of them to the resident’s families. The
Games were enjoyed by all and it seemed to connect the residents to
current affairs around the world as well as being very invigorating
for them.
The award was presented to Twyla Crystal, Recreation Co-ordinator at
Tuxedo Villa and her staff. |
